#9 A Bad Beginning

First book in A Series of Unfortunate Events
by Lemony Snicket

I've been wanting to read at least one book in this series. Unfortunately, I didn't like it as much as I thought I would. I think if I would have read the book before seeing the movie my reaction would probably have been different. However, I saw the movie a while ago. I think they did an excellent job on the movie and I found it to be very entertaining. The book was good, but I think I'll just wait and watch the movies from now on.

I read the first 6 before the movie came out. Enjoyed them, but it got to a point that I'd had enough. I liked the tongue-in-cheek humor and the definitions. When I read them, it was still a secret who Lemony Snicket really was, so that added interest. They did do a really good job on the movie and Jim Carey made a great Count Olaf. One of the highlights of the movie was the credits. Very creative.

Wow, I hated the movie. Well, hated is probably too strong, but I have a lot of complaints about it. I thought Jim Carey was great, but they made the movie about him and not so much about the kids. Also, they added way too much crap (the whole train bit is the most glaring example) while they left out a lot of good parts from the books and screwed up the whole flow of the books. Like a lot of books-to-movie movies, I thought they lost the real feel of the books, and made several bad decisions about what to keep and what to leave out.

I totally agree with you Ben. I thought that same thing when I watched the movie. I couldn't believe how much they had changed in the flow of the books. I have kept up reading the books and they were tedious to get through and then some good plot starts to unfold around book seven or eight. Only one more to come out and then I will be done.

I've never been interested in watching the movie or in reading the books. After reading the comments I feel the same way.

I've gotten a similar impression as Ben from several other people. I have enjoyed the books but had no desire to see a movie that crammed at least 3 of the books into one film. It just wasn't for me. I think the cast they picked for the children was good but didn't like Carey as Olaf...I still think he is too recognizable as a funny man to be truly despicable like Olaf is.
